✍🏼 Song Inspiration ✍🏼

Below are a couple of quotes from the Baha’i Writings that inspired this song:

“O MY SERVANT! Free thyself from the fetters of this world, and loose thy soul from the prison of self. Seize thy chance, for it will come to thee no more.” – Bahá’u’lláh

“War shall cease between nations, and by the will of God the Most Great Peace shall come; the world will be seen as a new world, and all men will live as brothers.” – ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

✍🏼 The Lyrics ✍🏼

[Intro]
When I say Be, You say Free, Be/Free, Be/Free
When I say think, you say peace, Think/Peace, Think/Peace

[Verse 1]
F to the R to the double E
There’s a ton of these
Troubles that we got hovering like a cloud, u cirrus?
Nope! Cumulonimbus, so
Hand me my umbrella please
That’s a clear mind clear soul to cover me,
From the rain and the thundering,
Shut all these bad energies, train my brain,
That’s my shuttle to peace,
Look down at the puddle and see,
The subtle reflection of the sun
Funneling one ray of light up to my eyes,
That’s hope, as I float, as I fly over what is bugging me,
took a sting from the bumbles, and they humble me, so I flee, then I’m humbly praying like a mantis, stand with strength through the suffering…
overcome all the struggles under me And I’m FREE

[Chorus]
So when I say Be, You say Free, Be/Free, Be/Free
When I say think, you say peace, Think/Peace, Think/Peace

[Verse 2]
P to the EA to the CE,
If I want it for the world, gotta feel it inside of me,
Positive Energy Activates Constant Elevation,
Of individuals all the way nations,
Purifying Every Action Completely of Ego,
Practice Empathy, Acceptance, Compassion that’s the Ethos,
Purposefully Engage All the Community Entirely,
Produce Expressions of Art that Cause Enlightenment,
Protect the Environment Actively Conserve the Earth
People Everywhere Are Created Equal across the world,
With peace, there’s prosperity,
Peace needs solidarity,
Peace, it’s the dream,
It’s the end and the means
Yeah, Peace, you can teach it, you can make it, you can build it,
Peace, you can learn it, you can add it to your skillset
Peace, from the West to the East,
All the war can just cease,
Spiritual powers released,
Now that’s PEACE,

[Chorus]
So when I say Be, You say Free, Be/Free, Be/Free
When I say think, you say peace, Think/Peace, Think/Peace

[Bridge]
When I remember who I was created to be,
Break loose from the chains, that’s free,
Released from the prison of self I become,
A pure channel of the Divine, that’s freedom,
One day these ruinous wars shall cease,
To make way for the Most Great Peace
When the whole world all becomes one,
The Most Great Peace shall come,

[Chorus]
Now when I say Be, You say Free, Be/Free, Be/Free
When I say think, you say peace, Think/Peace, Think/Peace

📖 The Story 📖

The final track of the album! For me, it’s always been a challenging (but fun!) process of determining the track order of my albums. In particular, for this album, there is a mix of deeply personal songs vs. more general songs, uplifting songs vs. reflective songs, etc.

“Free” felt like the perfect closer for this project, for a number of reasons. For one, it’s (in my opinion) one of the top tracks on the album, so it helps finish the album on a high note. Additionally, track 7 (“Ms. Carry”) is quite a heavy track. Miscarriage is a topic that is difficult, painful, and can bring feelings of sadness and grief. However, the flip side of miscarriage (and death, in general), is that the soul gets to leave this world and enter the world of light in the heavenly realms. It gets to truly be FREE. And finally, to choose to live a noble life is, in my understanding, the most freeing way to live, and also the lifestyle that will bring out inner and outer peace. So “Free” really brings it all together!

The origin of this song dates back to the summer of 2018 at a Rap Camp workshop I was helping to facilitate up in London, Ontario, Canada with my dear friend, Karim Rushdy. Throughout the 3 week workshop, I was in a creative mode, and was doing a lot of song writing! One of the tracks that was inspired during this time was “Free”. With the help of some friends, I came up with the call-and-response chorus, and also wrote the first verse of the track, which focused on the theme of “freedom”.

However, it wasn’t until a couple of years later, when I was putting together the “Created Noble” album that I came back to this track. At that point, I honed in on the concept of “peace”. As you can see in the lyrics, I honed in on the word PEACE, and identified various acronyms for the word that explore the various levels of peace (inner, interpersonal, communal, arts, environment, humanity).

Call-and-response songs are definitely one of my favorites to perform, as it is so much fun to engage with the audience! Fun fact about the vocals of this song: they are all me! I wanted the “response” part of the chorus to sound like a crowd, so I had to get creative. I ended up recording around 10 versions of myself yelling “FREE!” and “PEACE!” at different octaves. They were then mixed together in order to create the crowd-like effect.

🎁 Bonus Content 🎁

As I stated, this song was born in the summer of 2018 at the Heroes Rap Camp workshop! In addition to writing some of my own lyrics, I had the bounty of working with some AMAZING youth, helping them to develop their power of expression as well! Here’s a fun rap cypher with the group where each member got to introduce themselves:

Peace is a topic I’ve been interested in for some time! During my graduate studies at Arizona State University (where I studied Social Justice and Human Rights), I became deeply interested in the field of Peace Education. My graduate program internship was with an organization called “Teachers Without Borders”, assisting with their Peace Education program. This also led to my Graduate School final project, which was designing a Peace Education curriculum in partnership with the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections. You can check out the curriculum I helped design here:

Peace Education Course

Sadly, the course was never implemented, but I still view it as a major accomplishment in creativity! Check it out and maybe you’ll find an activity you would enjoy doing or facilitating with others!

Purposefully Encourage All Children Everywhere. Children and Youth are our future. As I enter the last stages of my life I have been thinking, how can I help with bringing Peace to this troubled World? To build generational prosperity by creating balance in the 4 Sectors of Life which are Health, Wealth, Spirit and Fun.
