Description: “I” is a song that explores my roots as a member of the Baha’i Faith with mixed heritage (Persian and white-American), delving into the aspects of social justice from the two cultures I inherited. The song also explores my journey into becoming a rapper, as well as my understanding of who we all are as human beings.
[Intro]
It’s time to get real on this one
It’s time to tell my story
So who am I?
Who am I?
Who am I?
[Verse 1]
How to identify
My roots travel to the other side of the earth
Ever since birth I was left to wonder why
I got this feeling inside that I’m not quite fitting in
You see my mother was an immigrant
Not by choice fleeing persecution from the revolution
Don’t accept her kind she’s a Baha’i
So is my father but he’s a white American
Living in a nation of white supremacist ideology
Messing with my psychology
On the one hand my people are oppressed by a clenched fist
On the other hand my people cover their eyes to a people with a raised fist
But the question is what is a hand for
To exert force? See it’s unfortunate
Instead of lending a hand or a handshake
Our forefathers couldn’t handle what the Redeemer of man had to say
Be ye as the fingers of one hand the members of one body
But instead they took everyone that embraced and embodied the Cause of oneness and dismembered their bodies
From Fort Tabarsi to Zanjan Nayriz Mazandaran Yazd Tabriz to Tehran
The blood of the martyrs like water flowing through the soil of the hearts of the righteous
And as their souls took the flight to bliss nothing but light to give
Breakers of the dawn forsaking their earthly form for the sake of God
The nation destined to be my destination
With the destructive machine of manifest destiny directly contradicting humanity’s destiny illuminated by God’s Manifestations
A country founded on lies
Indigenous genocide
Dirty money from cash crops on stolen land
Cultivated by stolen African hands
Blood of oppressive tyranny pouring down torrentially to the dirt and the seas of the West
Built on theft exploitation and the deepest form of prejudice materialism and selfishness
The most corrupt civilizations if you can even call them that
I’m tied to these two points on the map
The birthplace of the Dawnbreakers now in heaven
Gotta be a living sacrifice to be a spiritual descendent uh
[Chorus]
Who am I? Is it something assigned or do I get to decide? It’s on my mind yeah
Who am I? Who am I?
Who am I? Is my life really mine? Or guided by the Divine how to define? yeah
Who am I? Who am I?
[Verse 2]
As a youth I was timid afraid to stand out
Many thoughts up in my mind but my mouth not a sound
What if I am not accepted? too controlled by the doubt
So instead of using my voice I fade into the crowd
But then I found the power of rap
Just a fan at first but something about it would grab
My attention possessing my mind and my soul it was packed
With so much power and style and swagger
Wondered can I tap into that
So I picked up the pen wrote a couple lines
And the power started to flow with every rhyme
Written from my mind had to face my fear do I decide
To share or do I keep this power locked up inside uh
Something told me I had to share my light
Didn’t sound great at first but my friends said my flow was alright
And the message was nice but then the power stalled until
I had a moment that would change my life yeah
8000 miles from my home on a trip to Cameroon
God works in mysterious ways shout out to Awu and Duke Frank
I spit some rhymes for ’em gassed me up must’ve filled my tank
And reignited my drive to change the world my world was changed
Their encouragement gave me courage to take a leap
Recorded my first song new power released
Then time to release Went from A to Z
Writing rapping recording then releasing
Now people singing along to my songs with me and
I can feel the energy start to build up inside of me
Lyrics kept on flowing prayed to God to keep on guiding me
As I’m sharing Wizdome in my rhymes hoping it LIT up the mind
When I Release The Power of the pen and let it shine
To remind the people they’re Created Noble that’s my aim
And when I lay these verses down it’s sacred like a Holy Day
I want you to Be Happy when you hear me rapping
But it’s more than that because it’s giant shoulders that I’m standing on
In Hip hop so many artists in the history
and culture that helped make this movement into what it came to be
The empowerment the spirit of change and revolution against oppression strength and confidence and storytelling
Taking inspiration from the past and then on top of a beat
I humbly add a contribution that’s authentically me
[Chorus]
Who am I? Is it something assigned or do I get to decide? It’s on my mind yeah
Who am I? Who am I?
Who am I? Is my life really mine? Or guided by the Divine how to define? yeah
Who am I? Who am I?
[Verse 3]
I: One syllable one sound two horizontal lines running parallel bound by a pillar down the middle same symbol representing the most perfect Roman numeral, one
Before we reach this station our soul originates from the spiritual worlds of perfection
No beginning no end just like a circular dot but then at the time of conception
Whether you’re ready or not your soul connects to the embryo
Which is more like a box locked in by material laws
But then this dot and and this box capitalize together they are drawn to become one
To become I I am a human being but this only lasts a mortal life
My physical body remains in the world below acting like a mirror reflecting my soul uh
Until that day finally comes when it’s time to return body to the world of dust
As our soul yearns to come home to the spiritual realms like a stream to the ocean
Light ray back to the sun
We all come from God and unto Him we return created in the image of the Divine
See the light at the close of my eye cuz when I die is when my life truly becomes alive yeah
[Chorus]
Who am I? Is it something assigned or do I get to decide? It’s on my mind yeah
Who am I? Who am I?
Who am I? Is my life really mine? Or guided by the Divine how to define? yeah
Who am I? Who am I?
Description: A song about having hope in a troubled world of despair, featuring a palindrome verse in first verse of the song.
[Palindrome Verse 1]
Yeah, yeah, yeah
People are hopeless
And I will never believe that
People can change
You’ll see if you focus
I know this
That is reality
People are good
That is a fantasy
Controlled by the greed
Controlled by ambition
Controlled by the lust
Clear up your vision
Does God even exist
How can we know this
This is the question
Are all of us soulless
TAKING IT BACK
Are all of us soulless
This is the question
How can we know this
Does God even exist
Clear up your vision
Controlled by the lust
Controlled by ambition
Controlled by the greed
That is a fantasy
People are good
That is reality
I know this
You’ll see if you focus
People can change
And I will never believe that
People are hopeless
Yeah, yeah, yeah
[Chorus]
I got hope,
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I got hope,
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I got hope,
[Verse 2]
With no hope you will lose
Lose all hope you are doomed
So I hope that it’s hope that you choose
I got hope
Got hope in my mind
My life is hope defined
I hope you find hope in my rhymes
I got hope
Got hope when I pray
‘Cause my hope comes from faith
I hope that God shows you the way
I got hope
Hope got me feeling so high with no ceiling
You know that it’s hope that I’m dealing
Got hope,
The world is a mess
So I plan for the worst
Put in work and I hope for the best
I got hope,
Got hope in my eyes
See the truth through the lies
I hope we can keep hope alive
I got hope
Hope is a star in the night
You can’t turn off the darkness
Just turn on the light
I got hope
If you like it or not there’s no hope when all hope has been lost
So hope is all we got
I got hope
[Chorus]
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I got hope
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I got hope
Description: A song, featuring my wife Mallory, about our love for each other, inspired by our wedding vows.
[Intro]
I do
I do
I do
[Chorus – Colby]
I do promise that I’ll always stay true
High and the low, I will always stand by you
Love you with my heart and my soul, I do, like ooo
I do know we will always get through
Any test, we stick together like glue
You are the one in this world I choose, the next one too
I do
[Verse 1 – Colby]
Yeah, you are everything I’ve ever wanted
Kind, caring, and generous, I’m just getting started
So loving and genuine, you are trustworthy
When I’m messing up I am so grateful for your grace and mercy
Yeah, you are smart and you are spiritual
And hot dang, you are absolutely beautiful on the inside and out
Yeah, I love what you’re about
That’s why I had take this ring and put it around your finger
Cause’ the thing is I had struggled to commit
But then was thinking about my life if it was something you weren’t in
I gotta say, that would be a dark day, my spirit would be lost
You inspire me every day, brought me closer to God
You accept me for exactly who I am
But at the same time make me want to be a better man
I’ll feel your joy as my joy, I’ll feel your hurt as my hurt
Do I give my heart to you, 2 words
[Chorus – Colby]
I do promise that I’ll always stay true
High and the low, I will always stand by you
Love you with my heart and my soul, I do, like ooo
I do know we will always get through
Any test, we stick together like glue
You are the one in this world I choose, the next one too
I do
[Verse 2 – Mallory]
I always knew this day would come
The more time we spent together, knew you had to be the one
I’ve been able to laugh, every day since you came into my life
I look to the future, with joy and hope knowing you’ll be by my side
You’ve helped me learn what it means to sacrifice, for what we love
And never put what’s lesser above what’s more important
Like our relationship, family, serving others and God
You truly put me in awe
You’re always working-to-change our world for the better
The greatest partner I could ever ask for
Let’s change the world together
I feel so blessed, committing to a lifetime of love, appreciation, and cooperation
When the sky is gray, you are my sunshine
Do I think this love will last a lifetime
[Chorus – Mallory]
I do promise that I’ll always stay true
High and the low, I will always stand by you
Love you with my heart and my soul, I do, like ooo
I do know we will always get through
Any test, we stick together like glue
You are the one in this world I choose, the next one too
I do
[Verse 3 – Colby & Mallory]
I promise to be faithful to our sacred bond
I promise to love you in this life and the life beyond
And each day remind you of that love
I promise to be steadfast even when the times are tough
And treat it as an opportunity to learn
I promise that I’ll never lose my spirit to serve
And be an ease, to your responsibilities
I promise to be truthful, and honest, and show you honor and integrity
As I strive daily to live out my vows
I promise to be by your side through the ups and downs
And be your number one fan in the crowd
I promise to resolve every conflict that we have
And rebuild the broken pieces in the aftermath
I’m here for you through the pain, tears, joy, and ease
And every day in between
I feel so blessed that we get to live this life together
Do I take you as my partner forever
[Chorus – Colby & Mallory]
I do promise that I’ll always stay true
High and the low, I will always stand by you
Love you with my heart and my soul, I do, like ooo
I do know we will always get through
Any test, we stick together like glue
You are the one in this world I choose, the next one too
I do
Description: A song about discovering my unique gifts and talents as a changemaker rapper.
[Chorus]
You know it
I got it
Let’s get it
Let’s rock it
I know it
You got it
Let’s get it
Can’t stop it
[Verse 1]
The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know
The better you get the more you realize how far you have to go
Not competing against anyone except myself
Just trying to play the best game with the cards I was dealt
Took me 20 years before I even started flowing
My grandmother was a poet, you know it
Rhymes coded in my DNA
Grandfather was a teacher, that’s why I educate
Other grandfather a speaker, so I communicate nice
Super quiet ’til I realized I had something to say
And when I say it people to listen, so I learned
God gave me many talents, I’m an artist with the words, yeah
[Chorus]
You know it
I got it
Let’s get it
Let’s rock it
I know it
You got it
Let’s get it
Can’t stop it
[Verse 2]
We’re all blessed with a special something
The purpose of this life, find it and run with it
Do something you love with it
Earn yourself some funds with it
Mix your sweat and blood with it
Go lift others up with it
I may not be the most artistically gifted
But when you listen to the message in my song, guarantee you’re uplifted
Your mind and spirit, I lit it
Out of the box, I don’t fit it
Rhyme with divine knowledge in it
I break it down when I spit it
Sometimes I wonder if I’ll make it with this music
I’m giving glory to my Maker with this music
I may not become famous from this music
But I pray that the Creator grants me favor when I face the music
[Chorus]
You know it
I got it
Let’s get it
Let’s rock it
I know it
You got it
Let’s get it
Can’t stop it
Description: A song about striving to build a world founded upon the divine virtue of justice.
[Chorus]
Justice seems so far away
I hope we meet you one day
So veiled, might not even recognize your face
Shine your light upon the world, we pray
Justice seems so far away
I hope we meet you one day, one day
[Verse 1]
One day, one day, we’ll see everyone is made
From the same dust, just go check the DNA
It’s the same dust as the stars, way out in space
And just like the stars, we were made to shine our rays
All connected we’re a constellation, like the Milky Way
One day it’ll only be we, no more they
One day we will see we are the same
And feel each other’s pain
Any injustice and humanity will raise up as one
And we’ll break all the chains of oppression
No more weight/wait
One day, we’ll use peace instead of weapons
One day, we will put away the guns, and the blades
And the bombs, no more violence
Because they will never bring the type of justice that we hope to create
One that’ll never fade
A justice that will last until the end of our days
Where injustice finds a place in books of history where it should stay
Praying we can turn the page, ’til that day
[Chorus]
Justice seems so far away
I hope we meet you one day
So veiled, might not even recognize your face
Shine your light upon the world, we pray
[Verse 2]
We pray, we pray, because Justice comes from God
That’s one of His names
Out of all of His creations, that’s His favorite thing
When we’re working to bring justice, He will come to our aid
Helping us find a way
We pray, God help the light of Justice to shine
We say, we want justice but without the Divine
We may keep on coming up short, try adjusting our aim
And no longer equate
Justice with wanting law in order in a system that was unjustly made
For a few to benefit while the rest are in pain
Or thinking justice and revenge are the same
We pray for God to help us create
The type of justice that empowers everyone to see the part they can play
Choosing truth and righteousness
And to remove every trace of prejudice off the face of the Earth
As we birth a new Day where the Day star of Justice awaits
‘Til that day
[Chorus]
Justice seems so far away
I hope we meet you one day
So veiled, might not even recognize your face
Shine your light upon the world, we pray
Description: A song about striving for excellence in fatherhood, hip hop, and faith.
[Intro]
Justice
I hope I do it justice
Justice
I hope I do it justice
[Verse 1]
I grew up privileged in this social system
Now I see that but at first I missed it
I don’t wanna be another white passing man
Sitting on the sidelines, wanna take a stand
Help dismantle all of the oppression
See, when we’ve all become one we’ve won, that’s a leaven (eleven)
That’ll lift up humanity
Use my voice to change the world to heaven that’s my dream
Blessed with a great woman, that’s my wife
She brought me back to God to waken up my spirit, saved my life
Then I, found my calling working with the kids
And the youth to help them mine their gems, that’s a gift
Now I’ve got three of my own
Lead them down the right path, that’s my noble goal
To sacrifice my selfish ways, and show them all what love is
I hope I do it justice
[Chorus]
Only get one life to live
So I’m trying to give all that I got to give
Before it’s time to meet God, and I’m brought to Him
I hope I do it justice, yeah
Cause God the only One that can judge my life
But He also knows I know what is wrong from right
You judge a lamp by how bright it shines a light
I hope it I do it justice, yeah
[Verse 2]
They say it is easier said than done
It’s not words, but deeds for which we will be judged
I’ll never be perfect, but I gotta bring myself to account on the daily
To amount to why God made me
Too often I, got my eye on my Apple, instead of the apples of my eye
Outsmarted by my phone I, think I really need to monitor my time screen time
I, keep, yelling at my kids to stop yelling
Be more patient I impatiently tell ’em
Nothing humbles me like being a father, that’s a blessing
And I hope it I do it justice
A true father is an educator
Family comes first
No responsibility is greater than teaching you right from wrong
And how to worship Our Creator
I hope it I do it justice
[Verse 3]
So many greats in the past and the present
Of Hip Hop, I’m studying and learning from the legends
Of lyricism and flow, rhymes and rhythms and the
Originality it takes to captivate your soul
Bring authenticity, use similes and imagery
Like birthing new ideas in your mind with my delivery
And when I rap it’s coming from my soul, I do it spiritually, yeah
I hope it I do it justice
So many greats in the past and the present
Of the Faith of Baha’u’llah
To bring me inspiration, yeah
But how will live up to all the lofty expectations
Of sacrifice and selflessly serving
That is the station of a true Baha’i
And if I am being honest with you
Well mine feels infinitely distant from my true design
May God help me to improve my shine
I hope it I do it justice
[Outro]
I hope I do it justice
It is everything in this life
It’s being a husband, a father, an artist, an agent of positive change
A Baha’i, a child of God, all of it
I’m just trying to be a good human being while I’m on this Earth
I hope I do it justice
Description: A heartfelt song, expressing my love for my son, Justice.
[Chorus]
O Son of Spirit
The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice
Justice
Justice
Oh Justice
Justice
[Verse 1]
My son, you came at a time when the world was reeling from
A virus that spread across the whole planet
Millions of lives lost from the damage
Not only was the world sick physically
But spiritually, the symptom of police brutality
Showed humanity how damaging racial prejudice is, was, and can be
So much deeper than a symptom
Racial prejudice is like a virus that’s infected the entire system
Yet to some people’s eyes it’s hidden
That’s why the phrase Black Lives Matter has arisen
I pray the world listens, replacing racism with the Best Beloved of all things in God’s Vision
[Chorus]
O Son of Spirit
The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice
Justice
Justice
Oh Justice
Justice
[Verse 2]
Didn’t have a name picked out
The year you were born screamed it out
Justice
The thing God loves most
The more in your heart the more close
God gets to you
It’s being fair in all we do
And always seeking out the truth
You have it’s light inside of you
So do always see with your own eyes
And think with your own mind
A lens for your eyes to see
Let it show in your deeds
Do right by everyone
‘Cause God’ll see all you’ve done
Justice is a mighty seed
That’ll grow into the tree of unity
[Chorus]
O Son of Spirit
The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice
Justice
Justice
Oh Justice
Justice
[Verse 3]
Justice is a gift to thee
Justice, you’re a gift to me
I see so-much-of-myself in you
The seed of the tree is in the fruit
You wear your heart on your sleeve
I love the love you have for family
You’re such a goofball, you love to play
Shooting hoops for days, you got a mean J
So much joy when you’re dancing
But you get bashful when you get attention
You love to be independent
You’re reserved with your affection, when you share it, it’s a blessing
I love to watch you write your name
And how you write that little J
You teach me so much every day
Live up to your name, this I pray
[Chorus]
O Son of Spirit
The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice
